Self-Care
May 2026
Hello everyone!
Editing for book 1 of God Words is in full-swing and I have a little taste of it at the end of this newsletter… read on for more!
The Projects In Progress
Beta reader feedback is in!!
I was completely blown away by the positive response. It’s one thing to sit down and write a book, but to actually share it with people for their feedback? And for them to actually like it?! And then talk about your characters?! It’s like your imaginary friends have started talking to other people—so surreal and incredible!
My impatience to get this book into your hands is at an all-time high.
In saying that, I refuse to put something out there that I am not 100% proud of. So, self-edits are underway, and further edits to come! I will be sharing a bit more from the book, and maybe even some art (as I do it…) here on Substack and on my IG page. Scroll down for a little snippet! But first…
The Other Worlds I’ve Gotten Lost In Lately
As is the case when I am editing, reading has slowed down. I am working my way through a great ARC - Legacy of Flame by Mallory Moss. I cannot begin to describe how much this series is scratching a Star Wars/Game of Thrones/Romantic Drama itch in the best way. I have absolutely devoured the last half of this book, and have only a little more to go.
I am also still reading The Shadow of the Gods, and plan to get back to it soon - another amazing book that I rec even before finishing it.
Off On Tangents
I’ve been feeling pretty vulnerable lately—part of it I know is from riding around in the head of my MMC, but part of it is also just the world right now.
If you’re feeling the same, just dive into the things that make you happy. It isn’t selfish, you’re not letting anyone down. You’re taking care of yourself.
And go tell a friend or loved one how much you love what they’re working on. How proud you are of them. Odds are good they’re feeling it, too.
Speaking of my MMC, here’s a little snippet from a chapter of his I edited recently:
Pierce averted his eyes, thankful that his sleeves hid most of his markings from her scrutiny. How hot her anger must burn for those that hurt her brother. How heavy the guilt of not having been there must weigh across her shoulders. He understood how restless she felt to do something to avenge him.
He also understood the cost of binding oneself to a promise too costly to keep.
Yours in survival,
Ashley Marasco
